8vo., (10)175pp. Gorgeous First Edition of these first-hand sketches of prison life from one of the prisoners and who smuggled out pages in the lining of an overcoat. Beautifully bound in original green pebbled cloth with borders blind-stamped on both boards. Titling in gilt on spine. Tissue guarded frontis. Square, tight and clean throughout with some scattered spotting. Very light wear to edges. Tips lightly rubbed and bumped. Tiny nick in cloth on rear board. Previous owners signature on the front paste-down of George R. Brush M.D., US Navy, a Civil War veteran himself. Another signature, lightly in pencil, on the front endpaper. Last endpaper cleanly removed. A very handsome collectable copy and fairly uncommon in this condition.
