New York City: Harper & Brothers, 1863. First U.S. Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / No Jacket, As Issued. Item #010480
Tall 8vo., (4) 10-278(2)pp. Beautiful First American and First one-volume edition after the British triple-decker by Sampson & Low the previous year. Another edition, a 2 volume set published in Boston by Gardner Fuller in1863, has been arguably given primacy over the New York Edition but it is generally accepted that Harper's is the true first and certainly the authorized, American edition. Bound in original publisher's brown. ribbed cloth with decorative blind-stamped borders and publisher's logo. Titles in gilt on spine. Short list of other Collins titles on verso of title page and 2pp. of ads after the last page of text. Tissue-guarded frontis of the author, in-text illustrations. Double-column text. Square, tight and clean throughout with some fairly mild spotting to prelims and scattered on page edges. Some wear to the spine ends and tips with some cloth loss. Still, a very solid collectable copy of one of Collin's major novels, coming directly after his success with "The Woman in White". (Gasson p.115; Hubin p.88; Sadlier p.601a).
