Colton's New Township Railroad Map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey
New York: C,W, & C. B. Colton & Co., 1882. Cloth. Near Fine. Item #010931
42" x 29.5" (106.5cm x 75.2cm) Fold-Out Map. Housed in a 4" x 6" brown cloth case with blind-stamped decorated borders and titles in gilt. Map itself is in beautiful condition with no spotting or toning. A few minute tears in fold creases but no loss whatsoever. A few interesting contemporary annotations and line-tracing in either blue or red pencil but this is erasable if desired. The case is 95% split neatly along the spine but otherwise there is virtually no wear. A remarkably well-preserved example and very scarce in any condition. Founded by Cartographer Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893), the firm was renamed for his sons, George Woolworth (1827-1901) and Charles B. Colton (1831-1916). Throughout the second half of the 19th century, the company was a very prominent producer of maps, atlases, guidebooks and railroad maps such as this one. A simply gorgeous collectable slice of Americana.
