Captain Landon (Scarce 19th c. Dust-Jacket)

Chicago: Rand, McNally & Company, 1899. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine / Very Good. Item #010547

8vo.,391pp.. Beautiful First Edition, bound in brown cloth with titles in blue and white on front board and spine with red, white and blue horse and rider on front board. Square, tight and clean throughout with no toning or foxing. Only a touch of wear to edges and tips. Two small chips to the front end-paper and a couple of closed tears and creases to the last page of text. Still remarkably well-preserved. As is the very scarce original unclipped, though unpriced, dust-jacket. Some chipping to the spine ends and tips as well as a couple of chips and tears to a small section of the spine panel. Spine and edges mildly toned. Still quite bright and fresh and impossible to find in any condition. Savage, a US Army officers, wrote more than 40 suspense and adventure novels arguably based on his real-life experiences. Some claim the character, Doc Savage, written by Kenneth Robeson, was inspired by his real life namesake. A gorgeous collectable copy of an uncommon title and a great and scarce example of a late 19th century dust-jacket. (Hubin, p. 355).
