8vo., (viii)373(2)pp. Beautiful First Edition, Early Issue, very possibly the "intermediate" printing, between the first and second, mentioned by BAL(pg.247-248, #8781), which has a period after the word "Company" in the imprint but without the vignette title page. Binding "C" though order ..."has not been firmly established". Brown cloth with blind-stamped frame with squared inner corners and 8-petalled floret in a ring in each corner. No fleur-de-lis on spine. Unprinted light blue end-papers. Title page in red and black. Two pages of ads in rear titled "Valuable Books". Eight inserted plates as called for. Square, tight and clean throughout with mild page edge toning but not foxing. Front end-paper excised. Small piece out from the flyleaf. Wear to spine ends and tips but fairly minor. Some tearing to a couple of the plate tissue guards. Spine toning and gilt dulling a bit. Still well-preserved. A very pretty collectable copy,at a great price.
