Colton's New Township Map of Pennsylvania and the Southern Counties of New York
New York: C,W, & C. B. Colton & Co., 1871. Cloth. Fair/Good. Item #010944
42" x 29.5" (106.5cm x 75.2cm) Fold-out linen-backed map. Housed in a 4" x 6" brown cloth case with blind-stamped decorated borders and title in gilt. Front board detached. Ad on front paste-down is largely defaced with wear. Have wear and scuffing to boards with loss. Map itself is bright, colorful and 100% readable but has several tears along seems and a series of wear holes possible from prior insect damage. Founded by Cartographer Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893), the firm was renamed for his sons, George Woolworth (1827-1901) and Charles B. Colton (1831-1916). Throughout the second half of the 19th century, the company was a very prominent producer of maps, atlases, guidebooks and railroad maps such as this one. Not perfect by any means but still a complete, informative, and collectable copy at a great price.
