Laid in is a typed letter from Irving on his letterhead to a reader who had evidently sent a book or blank bookplates for him to sign. He explains that because he has had hand injuries, primarily from writing his novels in long-hand, his doctor has advised him not to sign anymore. He signs the letter with his printed initials. Funnily, he must have had signed bookplates already, or broke down and signed one, as there is one loosely laid into the book. A gorgeous collectable copy with a great letter.
