New York: J.H. Sears Co., 1928. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine / Near Fine. Item #017906
8vo., 147pp. Beautiful First Edition of Ade's homage to the stories that thrilled generations of boys, creating an anthology of pastiches of these mystery and adventure tales. Illustrated by John T. McCutcheon. Square, tight and clean throughout with gentle bumping to spine ends and tips. Mild wear to edges and tips. Bookplate on front paste-down. No toning or foxing to pages. Equally attractive unclipped dust-jacket, ($2.00), has a small chip at the top front tip. Mild toning to edges and spine. Still fresh and bright with no tears or creases. Long , and quite delightful, though self-deprecating inscription on the recto of the front end-paper, "I have been rather partial to this volume probably because, in my youthful days, I was an omnivorous reader of the dime novel and Nickel library. These stories attempt to burlesque a style of writing with which I was lovingly familiar. I regret to say that the reading public never became excited over my take-offs on the blood and thunder masterpieces. George Ade, Hazelden Farm, Brook Indiana. - May 23rd, 19319 Inscribed with best wishes, for Howard Wolf". Though Wall is unknown, this book came from a large collection of Ade titles all inscribed to him and he was clearly a close associate of the author. A gorgeous collectable copy and rarely found signed.
