The Gentleman's Companion. Volume I Being an Exotic Cookery Book and Volume II Being an Exotic Drinking Book

New York: Crown, 1946. 2nd Edition. Full-Leather. Near Fine / Slipcase. Item #018584

Two Volumes, 4to., 220pp., 217pp. Beautiful First Printings of the Second Edition of this hilarious and quite informative romp about the far east with hundreds of food and drink recipes by someone who it was hard to imagine was ever sober enough to write. Originally published by the Derrydale Press in 1939. Bound in variant Publisher's brown leatherette with titles embossed on spine and decorative illustrated vignettes on front boards. Marbled fore-edges. These were produced as promotional giveaways; in this case, "Compliments of Lafayette Motors, Inc. Detroit Michigan" is in gilt on bottom of both rear covers. red cloth with lettering in gilt on spine. Both volumes are square tight, and remarkably clean throughout with no toning or foxing to pages though there is some off-setting to the edges of the end-papers. Moderate rubbing to edges and extremities. Very good slip case has some nicks and wear and a couple of small pieces of remnant tape but still sound. A very handsome collectible set and very uncommon to find both volumes together from the same company's promotion and with the slipcase.
