The Woman in White

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1860. First U.S. Edition. Hardcover. Very Good / No Jacket, As Issued. Item #018779

4to., 260pp. Solid First American Edition published shortly before the British edition. State "3" of ads. with "Mulock" correct and 9 Thackeray titles listed on p.262. Bound in original publisher's brown pebbled cloth with titles in gilt on spine. Woman stamped in silver on bottom of spine. Blind-stamped decoration on front board with publisher's emblem. Double-column text. Square and tight . Fairly moderate spotting to prelims. with only an errant spot or two in text. Faint penciled name on front paste-down which almost blends in with the brown end-papers. P. 261-2 has some small chips to lower fore-edge but no affect to text. Some wear to tips and spine ends with a small loss of cloth to crown and heel. A bit of staining to cloth in spots but minor. A very pretty collectable copy of Collins' third great mystery after "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone", though every bit as good or better. Additional photos on request. (Hubin p.88; Gasson p.158-160).
